Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District Hosts Digital Bookmobile National Tour Event for their Students

Event shows students how to easily borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the school’s digital library
Traveling coast to coast, the Digital Bookmobile National Tour made a stop in Fairfield, California at Fairview Elementary on February 5, 2020. Fairview Elementary students learned about and accessed their school’s unique collection of ebooks and audiobooks through their classroom reading app, Sora. All students in Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District are able to use the Sora app to access ebooks and audiobooks. Fairview Elementary was selected for a visit because their brand new library space is under construction, thanks to funds from Measure J.

Fairview staff and eReading experts on the Digital Bookmobile helped students through the easy process of borrowing and reading thousands of ebooks and audiobooks from their school’s digital library. Through Sora, students can access these digital books for their classroom assignments as well as their pleasure reading. These reading materials are available for use inside the classroom, at home, and anywhere 24/7. Sora’s ease-of-use helps FSUSD students to read more, improve comprehension and learn critical listening through audiobooks.

Through a partnership with the Solano County Library, students have access to the FSUSD Student Access Card, an innovative way for students to utilize resources that are a part of the public library system. The Student Access Card allows FSUSD student IDs to serve as a Solano County Library cards. The Student Access Card program is modeled after those being introduced in many communities across the country. This partnership allows students to access both school and public library digital collections through Sora.

“We are thrilled to offer our students access to a variety of digital materials through Sora. We are building a community of readers and empowering students with access at school, home, and during the weekends and summer. The library is always open!” - Jenn Roush, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.

Equipped with interactive workstations, touchscreen activities, devices to sample titles and more, the Digital Bookmobile has everything a reader needs to get started. Popular devices, including iPhone®, iPad®, Android™ phones and tablets, Chromebook™ and Kindle®, fill the Gadget Gallery for students to browse Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District’s digital books.

The Digital Bookmobile is powered by Rakuten OverDrive, the industry-leading digital reading platform for more than 43,000 libraries and schools worldwide, including Fairfield-Suisun. Community members can also borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the local library by downloading the library's one-tap reading app, Libby.

FSUSD Students Are Amazing Readers

Congratulations Fairfield-Suisun community! We heard that you have AMAZING READERS ! Students in our community are working hard to learn foundational reading skills that will serve as the building blocks for a lifelong love of reading and give them the ability to read to learn ! FSUSD Libraries is on a mission to promote literacy and help each student see themselves as a reader! We distributed 30 signs to our 1st and 2nd grade teachers and asked them to use the Amazing Reader sign as a way to promote literacy, celebrate accomplishments, and let students SEE THEMSELVES AS A READER . We are excited to see the signs starting to pop up in neighborhoods as a way to promote literacy and celebrate a love of reading. Be sure to tweet the information and tag us in it! #FSUSDReads @FSUSDLibraries  Here is some more information from a report prepared by the Solano County Library around 3rd grade literacy: A study prepared in 2011 by Donald J.
