Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District Project Lit: Growing Readers and Leaders

Fairfield, CA – August 19, 2019: Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District students will have the opportunity to participate in diverse book clubs tied to community service this upcoming school year thanks to a Solano Community Foundation Education Plus! Grant. Teacher librarians in the district will use grant funds to start Project LIT Book Clubs for teens in the community. Project LIT Community is a national, grassroots Literacy movement, in which a team of dedicated teachers and students work together in forming a school-wide – and sometimes community-wide Literary Community.
FSUSD and Project LIT Community envision a future where all children become proficient, passionate readers who see the joy and value of reading, and who possess the literacy skills to choose their post-secondary path. In order for this to become a reality, every child deserves access to high-interest, culturally relevant books both inside and outside of school. Additionally, every child deserves daily opportunities to read, celebrate and discuss great books with peers and adults in their community.
Teacher librarians in FSUSD are excited to bring these book clubs to our middle grade and high school students. The Solano Community Foundation Education Plus! Grant will fund the purchase of all books, allowing students to build personal libraries and increase literacy and a love of reading in our Fairfield-Suisun community.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to empower students by providing them with voice, choice, and access to books that are inclusive and diverse. This would not be possible without the generosity of the Solano Community Foundation. I can’t wait to see the impact for our students and community,” shared Jenn Roush, Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction for FSUSD.

FSUSD Students Are Amazing Readers

Congratulations Fairfield-Suisun community! We heard that you have AMAZING READERS ! Students in our community are working hard to learn foundational reading skills that will serve as the building blocks for a lifelong love of reading and give them the ability to read to learn ! FSUSD Libraries is on a mission to promote literacy and help each student see themselves as a reader! We distributed 30 signs to our 1st and 2nd grade teachers and asked them to use the Amazing Reader sign as a way to promote literacy, celebrate accomplishments, and let students SEE THEMSELVES AS A READER . We are excited to see the signs starting to pop up in neighborhoods as a way to promote literacy and celebrate a love of reading.
